A lawn that looks fine in July can tell a very different story after two days of Nottinghamshire rain. If the grass feels spongy, puddles sit near the patio, or the dog brings mud straight back indoors, it is worth taking time to understand the cause. Knowing how to assess garden drainage before laying new turf, paving or artificial grass helps you choose a solution that deals with the ground beneath your feet, not just the surface you can see.

Artificial grass can make a garden far easier to use, especially for families and dog owners, but it should not be used to hide an existing drainage problem. The preparation underneath is what allows water to move through the surface and away properly.

Start by watching the garden after rain

The simplest drainage assessment starts when it is wet. You do not need specialist equipment to spot the first signs of a problem. Walk around the garden after steady rainfall and again the following morning. Make a note of where water collects, how long it stays there and whether it always appears in the same place.

A shallow puddle that clears within a few hours is not necessarily a serious concern. Water that remains for a day or more, however, deserves a closer look. Pay particular attention to areas beside the house, at the bottom of sloping lawns, underneath play equipment and along fence lines. These are common low points where water can become trapped.

Also look at the condition of the lawn rather than puddles alone. Yellowing grass, moss, bare patches, soft ground and worn muddy routes to a gate or shed can all suggest that the soil is holding too much water. In shaded gardens, the issue may be a combination of slow drying, compacted soil and limited sunlight rather than drainage alone.

How to assess garden drainage with a simple test

If there has not been much rain, a basic soak test can give you a useful indication of how freely the ground drains. Choose a representative part of the lawn, avoiding an obvious low spot unless that is the area causing concern. Dig a small hole around 30cm deep, fill it with water and allow it to drain away once. Then fill it again and see how quickly the water level drops.

The first fill wets the surrounding soil, so the second is the more useful guide. If the water drains steadily, that is encouraging. If it is still sitting in the hole many hours later, the soil may be heavy clay, compacted or resting above a less permeable layer.

One test does not give the full picture. Repeat it in a couple of areas, particularly if one end of the garden is much wetter than the other. Many gardens have different ground conditions across a relatively small space. A dry area near the house and a boggy patch at the bottom can need different treatment.

Check where the water is meant to go

Drainage is not only about whether water can travel down through the soil. It also needs a sensible route across the garden. Stand back and look at the overall fall of the ground. Is the lawn gently sloping towards a low corner? Does water run towards the property, patio doors or garage? Does a neighbour’s higher garden shed water onto yours?

Small changes in level matter more than most homeowners expect. A lawn can look level from the kitchen window while having a dip that catches every shower. Edges can cause trouble too. Raised borders, deep timber edging, patios and retaining features may hold water in an area that previously had somewhere to escape.

Check gullies and drains around patios, driveways and downpipes as well. Leaves, soil and moss can block them, causing water to overflow onto the garden. This is often an easy issue to address, but it is different from a lawn that has poor soil drainage. It is useful to identify which problem you have before planning any work.

Understand your soil and signs of compaction

Across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, many gardens have clay-heavy ground. Clay is not automatically a problem, but it drains more slowly than sandy or loamy soil and can become very sticky when wet. If a handful of damp soil rolls into a smooth, firm sausage rather than crumbling, it is likely to contain a good deal of clay.

Compaction can make any soil drain poorly. It often develops where children play, dogs follow the same route, a wheelie bin is pulled across the lawn, or garden work has been carried out in wet weather. The top layer becomes dense, leaving water with fewer gaps to pass through. You may notice that rainwater pools on the surface even when the soil below is not naturally waterlogged.

For a natural lawn, careful aeration and improving worn areas can sometimes help. However, this is not always enough where there is a significant low spot, persistent clay or a badly compacted base. Repeatedly re-turfing over the same underlying issue tends to bring the same muddy result back.

Look at the problem in different seasons

Do not judge drainage only on the driest day of the year. A garden that drains acceptably in summer may struggle through autumn and winter, when rainfall is higher, temperatures are lower and the ground has less chance to dry. Shade from trees, fences and neighbouring buildings extends that drying time further.

Think about how the garden is actually used. A quiet corner that feels soft for a few weeks may not affect your plans. A wet strip outside the back door, the path to the washing line or the area your dog uses several times a day is more likely to become a daily frustration.

Dog owners should look closely at regular toilet areas. Urine itself does not create a drainage fault, but a surface that stays wet makes cleaning harder and can lead to muddy paws and lingering smells. The right artificial grass and a properly prepared, free-draining base can make a genuine difference here. It still needs routine care – solid waste should be removed promptly and the surface rinsed when needed – but water should not be left sitting underneath.

Why artificial grass preparation matters

A good artificial grass installation is not simply a roll of grass placed on top of an existing lawn. Where required, the old turf and unsuitable material are removed so the installer can create a stable, permeable foundation. This normally includes a compacted Type 1 roadstone sub-base, suitable finishing layers and a weed membrane before the grass is fitted.

The balance is important. The base needs to be firm enough to prevent dips and movement, while still allowing water to pass through. It must also be shaped with the correct falls so water is not directed towards the property or held against an edge. Installing over soft, uneven or waterlogged ground may look tidy at first, but it can lead to puddling, ripples and an uneven finish later.

Artificial grass has drainage holes in its backing, but the holes are only one part of the system. If the layer below cannot take water away, the surface cannot perform as it should. This is why a proper survey is valuable, particularly in gardens with standing water, heavy clay or a noticeable slope.

When a deeper drainage solution may be needed

Some gardens need more than standard ground preparation. If water is regularly lying on the garden for long periods, flowing down from another area, or collecting against the house, the solution may involve reshaping levels, adding drainage runs or dealing with a blocked existing outlet. What is appropriate depends on the layout, soil, access and where water can safely be directed.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. A small dip in an otherwise well-draining lawn may only need correcting during preparation. A garden with widespread waterlogging may need more detailed work before an artificial surface is installed. Being honest about this at the start avoids spending money on a finish that cannot solve the underlying issue by itself.

What to tell an installer at a site survey

When arranging a survey, mention any puddles, damp patches or water that enters the garden from elsewhere. If possible, take photographs after rain. Explain whether the problem is seasonal, whether you have dogs or children using the garden, and which areas need to stay usable most often.

A professional installer should assess the existing levels, ground condition and likely water routes rather than recommending the same preparation for every garden.
